Hi there! We are so excited to announce that SAMA is officially collecting submissions for our eBook, slated for launch by September 2022. This anthology of creative works comprising poetry, art and prose aims to lend voice and agency to young people in Singapore to share their experiences and perspectives on the issue of gender equality in Singapore. In the recent global study by IPSOS, it was found that 24% of Singaporeans do not believe that gender inequality exists, and that feminism might in fact be harmful (IPSOS, 2022), with this burgeoning complacency likely goaded on by the lack of overt sexism. While overt demonstrations of gender discrimination such as legal inequalities with regard to reproductive rights and access to education have been largely eradicated in Singapore in the wake of Second Wave Feminism, systemic gender biases which disproportionately disadvantage women are still very much intact. From microaggressions at the workplace to the lack of recourse for women who are survivors of sexual assault, we would argue that our society is still very much entrenched in the insidious monolith of the patriarchy.
Speaking our truth and resisting reductive gender roles is powerful and integral in embracing our identity as women and appreciating the intersectionality of our diverse experiences. We want to hear your voice, your struggles, your stories.
If you feel strongly about gender equality or have faced gender-based discrimination, consider contributing to our E-Book and we look forward to reading your story, and sharing them for others to listen to.
With lots of love,
the SAMA team
